I am having trouble with starlings eating all my suet & leaving none for the woodpeckers. I tried mounting the suet holder on the bottom of another feeder, but they still can cling and eat.
Please help.

What is the name of the black and white bird with the long beak hanging from a bird feeder that is on the picture of your primary birding page on your website?

The name of the black and white bird with the long beak is a white breasted nuthatch. They also have greyish blue feathers on their backs and are about the size of a sparrow. they like to eat nuts and seeds, and they cling to trees, eating upside down or any which way! More on white breasted nuthatches can be found here:

Unfortunately there is no good way to keep starlings away from your feeders, except to try and get feeders that they find diffcult to access. Starlings are not good clingers, so they have a more difficult time trying to hang from certain feeders. Log suet feeders (made of a wood log with drilled holes that you insert the suet into) may work best, as only clinging birds such as woodpeckers and nuthatches can cling to them well to eat.

I have two starlings that are new visitors and I have two upside down suet feeders that I swap out to encourage them to go elsewhere(Like me,they don't hang upside down well for long) I also have put the least costly(cheap if you will) suet in their favorite feeder and I keep the suet logs with BirdNip in the other two suet feeders to feed the unique guests that adore that brand of suet. Starlings are beautifully marked if you can get by your rage of their gluttony.I also have 17 other active feeders that they can choose from!

I have a bag of bird seed I found in my garage and the manufacture date ins 02/09.
Is this too old to put in my feeders? It does have like white powder on the sunflower seeds but I didn't know if it was always there or if the food expires.

Thank you

My daughter helped a small bird, with down feathers only on the head, back into the nest, after falling out, attempting to fly. Will the birds parents continue to feed the birdies? Or what can we do to help them survive ?
